The 8th edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) is scheduled to take place in 2027.
The Commonwealth Sport Committee is holding a round table to decide which sport(s) could be added to its 2027 edition, and how the organisation should be improved, in order to renew public interest in this international event. Young people from various Commonwealth countries are asked to contribute to the debate.
You are part of your country's delegation (Canada, India, England, Australia or Scotland). The delegates are in charge of preparing a convincing contribution that will be presented at the round table.
You must:
- Present and promote a sport and its specificities;
- Explain how you could reduce the cost of the games (2 arguments);
- Find ideas to make the CYG as eco-friendly as possible (2-3 suggestions);
- Use the role cards and the worksheets below to get your arguments ready and be convincing! You may have a couple of notes on a small piece of paper;
- Then each delegate will participate in a round table with delegates from the other countries.
Possible roles:
- You are from Canada. You want the next CYG to be eco-friendly (give solutions) and to represent the values of the Commonwealth. You promote individual sports.
- You are from Australia. You think the CYG should promote diversity in the Commonwealth. You want more mixed-sex sports. You are not that keen on crazy sports. Besides, you do not want the Games to be too costly for the host city.
- You are from Scotland. You think the CYG should promote the traditional values of the CW countries, and should seek to be economically sustainable (give solutions). You promote team sports.
- You are from India. You think the CW Sports Committee should try to reduce the cost of the organisation (especially for developing countries) and you strongly believe that the Games should boost the host city's economy. (give ideas)
- You are from the United Kingdom. You are enthusiastic about including a new crazy sport to the 2027 edition, to make it more fun for teenagers, and to attract a wider audience worldwide.
